Kapamilya singer Daryl Neilson Ong is on cloud nine these days after he finally met his son Dwayne for the first time in almost four years.
“Nakita ko ’yung anak ko sa States. Nahiram ko sya,” said Ong during an interview on “Tonight With Boy Abunda” on ABS CBN.
“Akward nung una kasi ’yung four years na ’yun hindi kami nakakapag chat o nakakapag-usap,” said Ong.
“Medyo hindi kasi OK ’yung hiwalayan namin ng mom nya so nung nagkaroon ako ng chance na mapasama sa show ni Vice Ganda sa States, sinabi ko sa sarili ko na kahit hindi kami OK, hindi ako papayag na hindi ko man lang s’ya makita kasi nandun na ako sa States,” the former “The Voice Season 2” contestant said.
He added: “Sinabi ko na lang sa mom nya na nandito kami sa States, may show kami baka naman pwedeng after almost four years na hindi ko sya nakasama baka ito pwedeng mabigay mo sa akin ‘yung chance na makasama ko sya, maramdaman man lang nya na may tatay sya na nandyan pa rin.”
Ong, 30, said that he and his partner are now civil to each other.
He also recalled how his friendship with Vice Ganda started.
“Nagstart ’yun nung nagustuhan nya ’yung cover kong ‘Ikaw Na Nga.’ After nun nag-guest ako sa ‘Gandang Gabi Vice’, tapos napansin ko ’yung mga covers ko sa GGV ’yun ang pinapatugtog,” Ong said.
“Hanggang sa nagkakausap kami and may mga time na lumalabas kami. At the same time, mas nakita ko naman ’yung seryosong side nya. Nakaka-kwentuhan nya ako sa mga relationships nya,” the singer said.
Ong said that he appreciates his friendship with Vice Ganda because they trust each other.
“Sobrang na appreciate ko na pinagkakatiwalaan nya ako nung mga bagay na pribado sa kanya. Kung pwede nga lang magpo-post ng mga pictures namin kasi wala naman ’yun sa akin. Talagang alam naman namin na close lang kaming magkaibigan at nag-eenjoy kaming magkasama,” Ong added.
Ong started to sing when he was around six years old. His mom works for their church choir and it was in the same church that he learned and honed his skills.
The first song he ever learned was Mr. Pure Energy’s “Shout for Joy.”
Before he became a singer, Ong was once a cartoonist for a locally-produced animation.
Ong said that he joined “The Voice of the Philippines” for two reasons: To share his talent to the country and to reach out to his son who he said was secretly brought to the US.
