The government is beefing up its communications network to ensure the release of accurate information amid the Martial Law declaration in Mindanao.
Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar has announced the establishment of a “Mindanao Hour” communications center as well as looming appointment of a civilian Maranao as spokesperson on government updates about the situation in the South.
Andanar will head the Davao City-based communications center that will serve as “the main source of accurate and reliable information on the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao,” according to the Presidential Communications Operations Office. The communications center in Iligan City will be headed by Philippine Information Agency Director General Harold Clavite.
The Maranao spokesperson will “specifically address the Lanao region on updates on the government’s ongoing offensive against the Maute Terror Group in Marawi City.” No person has been appointed to the post yet.
“In this time of crisis, it is strategically wise for us to expand our communications language from national to regional in order to avoid marginalizing those who are most affected by the declaration of Martial Law,” Andanar said.
The PCOO said all processed information from conflict areas will be relayed to the Davao communications center and to Malacañang for the regular press briefings in Manila and Davao City.
The government plans to hold daily press conferences at the Davao center. These will be aired live over People’s Television and other government media entities.
Regular updates will also be available on the social media accounts of government media. (Genalyn D. Kabiling)
