The Philippine Blu Girls surrendered seven runs in the fifth and suffered an 11-5 loss to Puerto Rico in six innings Sunday in the Canada Cup International Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.
The Blu Girls led 4-3 entering the bottom half of the fifth when the Puerto Rico’s bats came alive to end an up-and-down campaign in the city located 40 kilometers from Vancouver.
Carsyn Gordon began the Puerto Rican outburst with a two-run single, reached second before advancing home on a single by Yahelis Cardona. Monica Santos inflicted more damage for the Filipinos when she hit a three-run single to make it 10-4.
Marta Fuentes completed the binge when she tripled to score Santos from first.
It was a bitter setback for the Blu Girls, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to take the lead on a three-run homer by Dani Gilmore in the fourth inning, only to falter in the next inning.
The Blu Girls began the tournament with three straight victories, including stunning wins over host Canada and Taiwan.
They would lose their next three games, including one against the same Puerto Rican squad but kept their title hopes alive when they beat Canada anew, 6-3, Saturday.
