Lyceum rode on a big second half performance as the Pirates dismantled the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 76-58, yesterday to keep their unblemished record intact in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
Down 35-34 at the half, the Pirates surprised the Altas with their pressure defense that resulted to a 13-0 run at the start of the third quarter.
That was all the Pirates needed to control the match as they cruised to their sixth straight win in as many outings.
CJ Perez expectedly led the surging Pirates with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
But it was not Perez alone who inflicted damage on the Altas.
Jesper Ayaay also stepped up with 12 points on a 6-of-9 shooting from the field while grabbing nine boards.
Mike Nzeusseu was also impressive with nine points, nine rebounds and one block.
What made Lyceum’s job a lot easier was Perpetual’s 27 turnovers – most of them in the third enabling the Pirates to pull away slowly but surely.
Lyceum’s defense was rock-solid it held Perpetual to just 10 points in the third.
Despite holding Lyceum to a season-low point production, Perpetual failed to recover from that third-quarter stumble.
Prince Eze scored 21 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Altas, who fell to 2-3 in the middle standings.
In the other game, rookie transferee Clint Doliguez scattered 12 of his career-high 22 points in the second quarter as defending champion San Beda routed Jose Rizal University, 54-48.
The Red Lions hiked their win-loss tally to 5-1, while the Bombers dropped to 2-3 in tie with the Altas.
