All is well between President Duterte and former House Speaker Prospero Nograles after years of fierce rivalry in their home city of Davao.
The President said Nograles did not have to apologize to him for their previous misunderstandings since they are now in good terms.
“Hindi naman kailangan ‘yan,” Duterte said during a media interview in Davao City when asked about the apology of Nograles.
“Magkalaban kami sa pulitika but eventually sinuportahan niya ako kasi it was to the best interest of Davao,” he said.
The President graced the birthday celebration of Nograles’ son, Davao City 1st District Rep.Karlo Nograles, in Davao City last weekend. It coincided with the young Nograles’ oath-taking as member of the ruling PDP-Laban party.
Nograles also grabbed the opportunity to apologize to the President for the past “heartaches we have had” during his son’ birthday celebration.
The former congressman ran for mayor back in 2010 but lost to Duterte’s daughter Sara Carpio. He was also beaten by Duterte in the mayoralty race in 1992. He made another unsuccessful bid for the same post against Benjamin de Guzman, backed by the Duterte clan.
The local rivalry softened when Duterte did not field any candidate to oppose Karlo in the congressional race in 2016. Nograles and his son also supported calls for Duterte’s presidential bid. (Genalyn Kabiling)
