San Beda survived University of Perpetual Help’s spirited challenge and eked out a 55-50 victory in a low scoring game yesterday in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The defending champion Red Lions started slow but got a big lift from Robert Bolick to extend their winning streak to 13 games for an overall record of 14-1 aside from eliminating Perpetual
The cat-quick Bolick scored 15 points and hauled down five rebounds for San Beda, which was held to a team-low 11 assists. Their 55-point output was also the team’s second lowest output so far of the season.
Red Lions coach Boyet Fernandez credited Perpetual’s solid defense, but was not completely satisfied with the performance of his boys.
“We have to go back (tomorrow) and think about our priorities,” said Fernandez. “Eleven assists? That’s not a San Beda basketball game.”
Later in the day, Jose Rizal University tightened its grip of the third spot with a 90-77 win over also-ran College of St. Benilde.
Jed Mendoza fired 19 points, Teytey Teodor added 16 markers, and AbdulWahab AbdulRazak had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bombers, who hiked their tally to 9-6.
Bolick, one of the veterans in the squad, partly blamed himself for not letting his teammates get involved in some plays.
“I should know when my teammates should score, know when to call the plays for them. But I was forcing my shots. Di dapat ganun,” said Bolick, who shot 5-of-18 from the field.
San Beda got its offensive rhythm in the second period where it outscored Perpetual, 16-8, to take a 27-19 halftime lead.
But the Altas pressed on the Red Lions in the last two frames, not allowing San Beda to lead more than 10 points.
A three-point conversion from Flash Sadiwa in the last 1:07 sliced San Beda’s lead to 53-49, but a useless foul by Prince Eze proved costly as it gave the Red Lions the needed momentum in the final minute.
