Senators yesterday hailed the Department of Finance for conducting lifestyle checks on its employees and attached agencies as this would boost the Duterte government’s anti-corruption drive.
Sen. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara said lifestyle checks on revenue agencies is proper given the expose regarding huge amounts of payoffs or the so-called “tara” system prevalent in the Bureau of Customs exposed recently in the Senate’s probe into the P6.4-billion shabu shipment from China.
“It is important that they be done fairly and to ensure honesty in the government service,” Angara said.
Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian welcomed the DoF policy as the nature of their work makes them prone to corruption.
“I support the initiative of the Department of Finance to conduct lifestyle checks on its officials and employees, especially revenue officers. The nature of their work, as stewards of the government’s wealth, makes them prone to temptations of corruption,” Gatchalian said.
