Rio Olympics silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz plunges into action Thursday afternoon (Friday morning in the Philippines) in the 2017 world weightlifting championships in Anaheim, California.
But it will be a huge task for Diaz to bring home a medal since she will be in the company of fellow biggies in the -53 category.
Leading the all-star cast is Rio Olympics gold medal winner Hsu Su Ching of Taiwan, Caitlin Hogan of the US, Kristina Shermetova of Turkmenistan, Joanna Lochowska of Poland and Thailand’s double entry, Supattra Kaewkhong and Sopita Tanasan.
Diaz hopes to win a medal in the worlds as it will give her an idea if it is still realistic for her to make it to her fourth Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo.
Diaz, 26, campaigned in the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics and her silver in Rio was the first Olympic medal for the country since Onyok Velasco’s boxing silver in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
