They’re called Balinsasayaw by natives in Palawan.
They are called thus because when these birds fly, they look like they are dancing. They are also different from other birds because they use their saliva in order to build their nests in caves.
Dr. Carmela Española states that Balinsasayaw likes caves near the sea.
They eat mostly insects.
Balinsasayaw is special because of their nests. These nests are harvested and used as an important ingredient in Bird’s Nest Soup (Nido Soup).
In Hong Kong, China and America one Bird’s Nest Soup costs about R1,500. According to Chinese Traditional Medicine, this soup can extend one’s lifespan.
A Busyador harvests these nests from the caves using a special torch made from resins of trees, called “Sahing.”
Balinsasayaw loves the smell of sahing, thus drawing them to the torch.

Thanks to our TV show, Matanglawin, we had the opportunity to celebrate my birthday in South Korea, at the height of winter!
Our episode yesterday captured the rare experience for us, which we shared with my son, Jose. We toured the home of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
As the program’s special MatanglawinAdventurista, Jose joined me in exploring the featured forest in Korean drama “Goblin” where we found the 600 year-old grandfather tree in Woljeongsa. There, Jose experienced “forest bathing” while I tried my luck at the forest’s “wishing stones.”
Jose also went skiing in Pyeongchang winter wonderland while I, the true animal lover, visited the Daegwallyeong sheep farm.
“Matanglawin” which recently received the Media Excellence Award from the National College of Science and Technology (NCST). Our show airs every Sunday, 9:45 am on ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN HD.
