The Philippines defeated Indonesia yesterday after taking the doubles and the first reverse singles in the Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie in Jakarta, Indonesia.
After splitting the opening singles Friday, Francis Casey Alcantara and Jurence Mendoza prevailed over Justin Barki and David Susanto, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the doubles before AJ Lim completed the win following a hard-earned 6-3, 6-4 win over Susanto.
Lim’s triumph reduced the second reverse singles pitting John Brian Otico against Anthony Susanto a dead rubber.
The triumph earned the Filipinos a second-round meeting with the winner between Thailand and Sri Lanka, who are also playing at presstime.
The Philippines will host the second round tie on April 7 to 8.
Lim, who won 6-3, 6-2 against Dhaifullah in the opening singles Saturday, took advantage of a weary Susanto in the first set before finding stiff resistance from the veteran Indonesian netter in the second frame.
They traded service breaks in the first two games until Susanto dropped his serve in the ninth game to give Lim the 5-4 lead. (Kristel Satumbaga)
