LOS ANGELES – Jerwin Ancajas’s knockout win over the weekend in Corpus Christi proved one important point: Top Rank was right in signing the Filipino fighter to a juicy multi-fight contract.
Ancajas’ tenth-round TKO win over a game Israel Gonzalez of Mexico was so impressive the head of the Las Vegas-based outfit predicts the reigning IBF super-fly king will become a superstar.
“Jerwin is on his way to become a major star and attraction in the USA,” said Lee Samuels, who started working for the Bob Arum-owned company in the early 1980s.
“He has a unique personality and in the ring he delivers firepower” added Samuels.
Arum inked Ancajas to a three-fight deal late last year following the lefty’s demolition of Jamie Conlan of Northern Ireland in Belfast with US agent Sean Gibbons lending a hand.
Making the fourth defense, Ancajas was lauded for comforting and consoling his Mexican opponent instead of joining members of entourage in the celebration at the American Bank Center.
The Gonzalez win was Ancajas’ fourth straight after stopping Jose Alfredo Rodriguez of Mexico in Macau and Teiru Kinoshita in Brisbane.
