Senate and Malacañang-Philippine Sports Commission forced a rubber match in their respective semis series by pulling off contrasting wins over higher-ranked rivals in the 6th UNTV Cup held over the weekend at the Pasig City Sports Center.
The Senate Defenders leaned on a furious start to score a massive 74-64 upset win over the top seeded and two-time champions Armed Forces Cavaliers in the opening of their best-of-three series.
Gari Sevilla, Jeff Sanders and Marlon Legaspi set the tone for the team’s runaway win by leading the team to a 29-15 first quarter lead which the Defenders wisely protected to force a knockout match with the twice-to-beat Cavaliers.
The Malacañang-PSC Kamao were equally impressive as they eked out an 86-82 overtime win over the National Housing Authority Builders in the annual event organized by UNTV president and CEO Daniel Razon.
The Kamao and the Builders reached the semis outright apart from securing twice-to-beat bonuses after finishing the double round elims 1-2, posting 9-1 and 8-2 marks.
The charity chosen by this year’s champion gets P4 million while the runner-up’s charity shall receive P2 million.
