University of the Philippines snapped its four-game losing spell after rallying to beat University of Santo Tomas, 31-33, 25-23, 25-16, 25-12, yesterday in UAAP women’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Maroons dropped the opening set but maintained their poise in the next three frames behind the sterling performance of outside hitter Tots Carlos to tie their victims at 2-4.
Carlos pumped in 32 points built on 27 attacks, three blocks and two aces, while getting reinforcements from Isa Molde, who added 24 points including 23 hits.
Aside from the offensive exploits of Carlos and Molde, the Lady Maroons also played solid defensively as they produced 14 blocks.
Their defense was so tight it that only Sisi Rondina managed to deliver for UST – thanks to the efforts of Maristela Layug and Marian Buitre.
The two combined for 9 blocks.
Rose Cailing also stepped up, converting 31 excellent sets apart from finishing with six points.
Rondina persevered and finished with 23 points all from the attack line.
In men’s play, National University halted Far Eastern University’s five-game run with a 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 triumph to forge a three-way logjam for the lead with similar 5-1 cards.
Bryan Bagunas fired 22 points, including 19 kills for the Bulldogs, who tied with the Tamaraws and the Ateneo Eagles.
