National University regained its old form after last week’s stinging defeat as it downed University of the Philippines in straight sets, 25-23, 25-23, 25-17, in UAAP women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan City.
Putting their four-set defeat to the Far Eastern University Lady Tams behind, the Lady Bulldogs dominated the game despite the spirited challenge of the Lady Maroons – thanks to the inspired plays of Jaja Santiago.
With the win, NU finished the first round elims with a 6-1 mark – their best start since the league adopted the Final Four format.
Reigning titlist La Salle, however, is not far behind as the Lady Spikers are tied with the FEU Lady Tamaraws for second with similar 5-2 marks followed by Ateneo with a 4-3 record.
The 6-foot-5 Santiago expectedly led NU with 17 points, including 16 kills.
She credited the team’s early success to their new-found confidence and teamwork.
And she warned: “Mas lalakas pa kami.”
Risa Sato also sparkled for NU with 10 points even as Jasmine Nabor contributed 32 excellent sets.
