Defending champion La Salle guns for the solo lead today as it goes for a repeat over University of the Philippines in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Spikers and the Lady Maroons clash at 2 p.m. with the former out to follow up their impressive wins over rival Ateneo and erstwhile solo leader National University.
The back-to-back wins enabled the Lady Spikers to tie the Lady Bulldogs for the lead at 6-2.
Multi-titled coach Ramil De Jesus was particularly delighted with the team’s 25-27, 25-27, 25-16 win over NU, saying his players showed the character that he wanted from them.
“Andun na yung kapit. Yung kahit lumalamang yung kalaban, di namin pinapakawalan,” said De Jesus.
De Jesus, however, hopes to see a more aggressive endgame for the Lady Spikers noting other teams have also improved since the first round elims.
La Salle is expected to lean on their strong serves after leading that department, as well as on their floor defense anchored on libero Dawn Macandili and offensive versatility of Kim Dy, Majoy Baron and Desiree Cheng.
Toting a 3-5 mark at joint fifth, UP hopes to shrug off a 25-21, 25-22, 26-24 first-round loss to La Salle.
Tots Carlos banners the Lady Maroons along with Isa Molde and Ayel Estranero.
In the other pairing, Far Eastern University looks to improve its 5-3 record when it tangles with skidding University of Santo Tomas (2-6) at 4 p.m.
