Loyalty comes first for Goldwin Monteverde.
Courted by University of the East to handle the Red Warriors, Monteverde has decided to stay put at the Nazareth School of National University to sustain the Bullpups’ successful program.
Arguably one of the most sought-after tacticians in the high school ranks with his string of championship runs in Fil-Chinese leagues, Monteverde recently re-affirmed his commitment to the Bullpups and their parents following their strong UAAP title run that ended at the hands of eventual champion Ateneo early this month.
“The players and their parents welcome Gold’s decision to stay. They are very happy because they believe that Gold’s (basketball) program is effective,” a reliable source told Tempo-Manila Bulletin yesterday under a condition of anonymity.
Despite the departure of six vital cogs, the Bullpups will remain a force to be reckoned with, thanks to the entry of 6-foot-7 Carl Tamayo, named by Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes to his “#23for23” training pool for the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Manila.
Tamayo, who’s already seeing action for he Bullpups in the ongoing National Basketball Training Center competitions at the MOA Arena, is expected to provide enough support to fellow Batang Gilas standout Terrence Fortea and do-it-all big man Rhayyan Amsali.
