Outgoing Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald M. dela Rosa yesterday commissioned a brand-new multi-role helicopter that would strengthen its law enforcement operational capability.
“This brand new air asset will bolster the operational capability of the PNP in addressing criminality, terrorism, and other police emergencies that require air-ground operations,” said Dela Rosa.
The helicopter is one of six bought by the PNP from the Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. based in Fort Worth, Texas. It was delivered and inspected on April 12, three months ahead of the supposed delivery on July 5.
Dela Rosa said the chopper is now undergoing inspection and evaluation prior to the formal acceptance.
He pushed for the procurement of the six choppers through a request from President Duterte. “We are grateful to the national leadership for its genuine concern for the police force by providing for our operational requirements. With better equipment, sufficient funds, and upgraded wages for personnel, there is no reason to fail in our mission to serve and protect our people,” said Dela Rosa.
“The PNP’s acquisition of the Bell 429 twin engine rotary wing aircraft will greatly enhance the operational flexibility by providing air support to ground troops. This multi-role police helicopter is designed to perform variety of air support missions,” he added.
Deputy Director General Archie Gamboa, PNP Chief Directorial Staff, said they expect two more choppers to be delivered in July this year.
The three choppers have a total contract price of P435.8 million.
Once the delivery for the initial three choppers is complete, Gamboa said they will start the procurement for two single engine helicopters. “We will also be procuring two more trainer helicopters,” said Gamboa.
Dela Rosa then boarded the Bell 429 twin engine helicopter which transported him from Camp Crame in Quezon City to Baguio City where a testimonial parade was held for him at his alma mater the Philippine Military Academy.
