Jonas Sultan, the mandatory challenger to Jerwin Ancajas’ International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight crown on May 26 in Fresno, California, has entered the most crucial phase of his builup.
Reporting from his homebase of Cebu City, Sultan told the Bulletin-Tempo that his sparring partners include fast-rising KJ Cataraja and Joy Formentera.
“Hard training,” Sultan said with a month remaining before his shot at Ancajas’ IBF 115-lb title, a matchup that will see two Filipinos vying for a world title for the first time in almost a century.
Top Rank chief Bob Arum said Fresno, California, will host the much-awaited match.
Sultan, the clear underdog, said he has gone 12 rounds in sparring and he is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to ruin Ancajas’ plans.
Sultan and his training team is set to fly to the US in the frist week of May.
Ancajas, who is likewise immersed in training in Magallanes, Cavite, will depart for the US on May 15, according to lead trainer Joven Jimenez.
