Unfazed even on enemy’s territory, Team Philippines foiled host Thailand Chulalongkorn, 50-40, in a closely fought winner-take-all encounter to claim the 2018 Pacific Rim NCAA Basketball Championship 14-under division title at the Chulalongkorn University Coliseum in Bangkok, Thailand over the weekend.
The promising Filipino ballers, built around the core of NCAA powerhouse San Beda, overcame a spate of injuries to three vital cogs as they took full advantage of their speed and quickness to run the taller Thais into the ground and rule the 16-team tourney featuring nations from the Pacific Rim.
San Beda Taytay center Prince Ray Alao carried the offensive thrust on his way to the tournament MVP title while spitfire guard Lanze Ranquiloo and Nathaniel Manarang provided the needed stability for the PH side.
Also doing their fair share of contributions were Tonchie Conde, Carlo Bathan, Deandre Largueza, Yco Protacio, Dexter Alapar, Marlon Alcera, Red Caidic, Jabez Lirazan and Marcus Espiritu.
“The boys gallantly neutralize Thais strength at the paint area with speed. I told them that they are playing not only for San Beda but for the Philippines,” said Team Philippines coach Manu Inigo. “Now, they are our new sports heroes. They deserve this victory.”
Serving as Inigo’s deputies were VL Sandalo and AndyMejos.
San Beda University sports head Ato Badolato and Cocolife supported the team’s trip to the Thai capital.
