High school standout Rhayyan Amsali is seeking a fresh start as he bolts out of top UAAP contender Nazareth School of National University and opens a new chapter in his promising career with NCAA powerhouse San Beda.
The 6-foot-3 Amsali, 17, considered by many as one of the top big men in the high school ranks today, formally made his transfer to the Red Cubs’ den official by signing a contract last Wednesday in the presence of San Beda coach JB Sison and co-team managers Jarvis Co and Arnie Avellaneda.
“I think San beda can help me work hard on my skills,” he told Tempo-Bulletin in an online interview. “I’ve always looked up to them even when I was still playing in UAAP. I think they have great strategies and teamwork in playing.
I am looking forward to learning new techniques and tips that I could use inside the court.”
His move to San Beda not only puts him as the new face of the Red Cubs following the graduation of star guard Evan Nelle, Sam Abu Hijleh and Germany Mahinay, Amsali could also see himself back in the Batang Gilas’ unit for the FIBA U-18 Basketball World Cup hosted by Argentina this June.
“As of now, focus muna po ako sa (Batang) Gilas, Sir,” he said, adding he’s excited to team up with his incoming Red Cubs teammates Yukien Andrada and Joshua Lazaro for the Nationals under the tutelage of tactician Mike Oliver.
The addition of Amsali could give the Red Cubs the needed inside presence underscored by his solid averages of 13.1 points, nine rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 steals while leading the Bullpups to a bridesmaid finish in the UAAP juniors cage wars last March.
In the NCAA, the Zamboanga native can play for two more years – instead of just one year in the UAAP – and he can immediately suit up next season, giving him ample time to hone his skills and make himself more ready before bringing his act to the senior level.
