Motorists from Metro Manila and elsewhere have welcomed the decision of the government to mark petroleum products to stop the practice of some unscrupulous gas station owners from adulterating the commodities maximizing their profits.
They said it will not only protect car engines from corrosion due to the dilution of gasoline and diesel with kerosene and other gas substances.
Vehicle owners made the observation following the announcement by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) that it will subject to fuel marking oil products before the end of the year together with the Bureau of Customs (BOC).
BIR Deputy Commissioner for Operations Arnel Guballa said the scheme will not only maintain the quality of oil products but will curb the rampant smuggling of the commodities which has been causing the government to lose more than P30 billion in excise tax yearly.
The revenue official attended the recent seminar on fuel marking in Geneva ,Switzerland.
Basically, fuel marking consists of pouring molecular elements to fuel products brought in by tankers that pass through the Bureau of Customs.
Guballa said the electronic device will be mounted in vans that will regularly check the supplies of gas stations in Metro Manila and elsewhere. (Jun Ramirez)
