Magnolia import Romeo Travis received a congratulatory message from one of the world’s most popular athletes shortly after he was named Player of the Game in the Hotshots’ 113-95 win over the Columbian Dyip last Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Way to work my brother!!!” Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James told Travis through Twitter late Wednesday night.
Travis is a childhood friend of James, the two having played for St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio.
“Thanks bro!,” responded Travis, who posted 32 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists against the Dyip.
James, Travis and other childhood buddies – Dry Joyce III, Sian Cotton and Willie McGee – were featured in a 2008 sports documentary that told their basketball journey from pre-teens all the way to high school.
James obviously went on to become one of the NBA’s premier players, though success hasn’t hindered the three-time champion’s bond with his former high school teammates.
“We text all the time in the group chat,” Travis earlier in the PBA Governors’ Cup. “You know, we send funny videos. Just I don’t know. We’re just friends.”
Getting James’ attention is certainly evident as to how Travis has played well for the Hotshots this conference.
Travis is averaging 22.7 points, 16.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.8 steals and 1.2 blocks to help Magnolia win five of its first six games.
