Far Eastern University leaned on the heroics of Valerie Mamaril to score a 73-71 come-from-behind win over Ateneo in the UAAP Season 81 women’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Mamaril shattered a 71-all count with a gutsy drive that turned out to be the winning play as Ateneo’s Jollina Go missed an undergoal stab.
Cortizano added 21 points and four assists as last year’s runner-up University of the East shocked De La Salle, 86-69, for its only second win of the tournament.
FEU hiked its record to 6-2 just behind defending four-time champion National University’s 7-0 record.
Clare Castro came through with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks while Mamaril and Fatima Quiapo each scored 14 markers for the Lady Tamaraws.
Go led Ateneo with 21 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting while Trina Guytingco contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
