TAGAYTAY CTY – Defending champion GM Eugene Torre made it three wins in a row by beating compatriot IM Angelo Young in the third round of the 9th Asian Seniors Chess Championships at the Tagaytay International Convention Center here Monday.
Torre, who is hoping to make it back-to-back championships, played almost flawlessly with white to subdue Young in 51 moves of Larsen Opening and assume solo lead with three points in the 34-player, nine-nation competition hosted by the Tagaytay City government thru Cavite 7th District Cong. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and Tagaytay Mayor Agnes Tolentino.
The 67-year-old Filipino champion, who bagged the title with a perfect 9/9 in Auckland, New Zealand last year, had positional and material advantage over Young when the end came.
Young resigned after Torre’s 51.e6, threatening mate or loss of more materials.
Torre had two rooks, two bishops and four pawns against Young’s two rooks, one knight and three pawns.
