Four days after tropical depression “Samuel” lashed the central part of the country, a new tropical cyclone is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this weekend.
The tropical cyclone with the international name “Man-yi” was spotted by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration at 1,400 kilometers east of Southern Luzon Friday morning.
Typhoon Man-Yi packs maximum sustained winds of 145 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 180 kph, moving west northwest at 25 kph.
Man-yi is expected to enter PAR Saturday night or Sunday morning and will be given the local name “Tomas,” the 20th tropical cyclone to hit the country this year and the second this month.
PAGASA weather specialist Gener Quitlong said that the chances of Tomas making landfall in the country is still slim based on its latest forecast track.
However, PAGASA warned that Tomas might affect the coastal waters on the eastern part of Luzon.
Samuel, now referred as “Usagi” (international name), continues to weaken after exiting the country Thursday.
Usagi was last located 795 kilometers west of Southern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gustiness of up to 80 kph, moving west at 20 kph. (Alexandria Dennise San Juan)
