University of the East inched closer to retaining the men’s championship after winning three golds in the first two days of the UAAP Season 81 fencing tournament at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City.
CJ Concepcion nabbed the individual saber gold while Sammuel Tranquilan took the individual epee gold in last Thursday’s opener.
Gunning for a seventh straight crown, the Red Warriors made it 3-of-3 Friday after Tranquilan topped the individual foil event.
Tranquilan and Concepcion provided UE’s two silvers in the individual saber and foil categories, respectively.
De La Salle is at second place with a silver and a bronze to show, while Ateneo had three bronzes in third spot as the four-day tournament reached the midway point.
Maxine Esteban’s gold medal wins in the individual foil and saber events propelled Ateneo on top of the women’s division.
The other Lady Eagles medalist was Patricia Beatriz Paolo with her individual foil bronze.
University of Santo Tomas is in second place with Marielle Peralta winning the gold in the individual epee, and two bronzes courtesy of Mira Dorimon in the individual efee and Cherie Mañago in individual saber.
The Lady Warriors are running third with two silvers and two bronzes.
In the juniors division, UE is poised for another golden double after a 3-1-3 gold-silver-bronze haul in the girls and 2-2-1 tally in the boys side, with last season’s MVPs Samantha Catantan and Prince John Francis Felipe leading the charge.
