Jerry Cantu of California was named by the International Boxing
Federation (IBF) as referee for the fight for the vacant minimumweight
title between Filipino Mark Anthony Barriga and Carlos Licona of the
US on Dec. 1 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The three judges, according to Barriga’s agent Sean Gibbons, are
Edward Hernandez Sr., also from California, Tom Carusone of
Connecticut and Esther Lopez of New Mexico.
The Barriga-Licona showdown will happen underneath the massive world
heavyweight title clash starring American champion Deontay Wilder and
British challenger Tyson Fury.
Barriga, 26, arrived in the US last week and is being joined there by
trainer-manager Joven Jimenez, world champion Jerwin Ancajas, strength
coach Delfin Boholst, former amateur star Charly Suarez and Team
Barriga social media staffer Mark Lontayao.
Licona, 23, was born in Mexico but grew up in California.
Before turning professional more than two years ago, Barriga fought
extensively as an amateur, having represented the country in the
Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and the Olympics. (Nick Giongco)
