Former First Lady now Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos on Wednesday finally posted P300,000 bail before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division after she was granted permission to file post-conviction remedies.
She was not present during the posting of bail which her lawyers did in her behalf. They also paid P4,700 worth of legal fees.
Marcos was found guilty on seven counts of graft which were filed back in 1991. These stemmed from her “direct and indirect financial or pecuniary interest” in the management of several non-government organizations created in Switzerland from 1968 to 1984.
She maintained accounts with the Swiss Bank Corp. for the foundations “for the benefit of the accused and her late husband,” according to the charge sheets.
At the time, she was Minister of Human Settlement and Environment Management, Metro Manila governor, and a member of the interim Batasang Pambansa.
Because of her conviction, she could either file a motion for reconsideration before the Sandiganbayan or elevate her case to the Supreme Court.
So far, she has not filed any motion for reconsideration before the anti-graft court. What she did was file a notice of appeal on Nov. 26.
Marcos feels wronged by her guilty verdict, so she “requests that the records of the instant case be forwarded to the Supreme Court for further proceedings.” (Czarina Nicole Ong)
