Second seed International Master (IM) Jan Emmanuel Garcia ruled via tiebreak the first Metropolitan Chess Club (MCC) Rapid Chess Championships over the weekend at the Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong City.
Garcia (ELO 2404) actually tied for first place with No. 5 FM Mari Joseph Turqueza and No. 8 FM Austin Jacob Literatus with 6 points apiece in the FIDE-rated event organized by MCC in cooperation with MILO.
Garcia won the Champion trophy, a gold medal and shared R30,000 with Turqueza and Literatus who finished second and third, respectively.
Rounding off the Top 10 were: NM Emmanuel Emperado, fourth; Jayson Danday, fifth; Ryan Christian Magtabog, sixth IM Chito Garma, seventh; IM Barlo Nadera, eighth; Alwin Sopungco, ninth; and Sherwin Tiu, 10th.
Top seed IM Ricky de Guzman landed in 15th place with 4.5 points.
