A policeman was wounded after his service firearm accidentally went off inside the police station in Daanbantayan, Cebu the other day.
The accidental firing happened at past 8 p.m. last Wednesday while PO1 Socrates Lipaopao was unloading his service firearm – a Glock 9mm pistol.
“He was about to end his duty. He tried to unload his firearm but it went off,” said Chief Insp. William Homoc, chief of the Daanbantayan police station.
The bullet pierced through the policeman’s left palm before hitting his left leg.
The policeman was taken to the hospital.
Lipaopao was one of the 28 policemen who were newly assigned to Daanbantayan after the previous 28 personnel were sacked for their supposed failure to curb the illegal drugs trade in the town.
Because of the incident, Senior Supt. Manuel Abrugena, chief of the Cebu Provincial Police Office, ordered all policemen in Daanbantayan to undergo retraining on gun-handling to prevent a similar incident from happening again. (Calvin D. Cordova)
