MIAMI (AFP) – Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Anthony Sherman each produced a touchdown Sunday and the American Conference beat the National Conference 26-7 in Sunday’s NFL Pro Bowl all-star game.
Mahomes completed 7-of-14 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown to earn Offensive Most Valuable Player honors while Sherman caught three passes for 92 yards and ran four times for 11 yards and a touchdown in the victory.
The American Conference stretched its lead to 24-22 in the all-time rivalry, inflicting the lowest losing score since 1993 on the National Conference.
The contest, played in cold and rainy conditions in Orlando, Florida, saw a 35-second play clock to hasten pace of play and multiple coach-to-player electronic communications rather than only one allowed in regular NFL games.
Mahomes threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Indianapolis tight end Eric Ebron for a 7-0 American Conference lead just 3:34 into the game.
“You dream about it but until you’re here and actually part of it you can’t measure it,’’ Mahomes said. “It’s great to be around all these players. There are a lot of competitive dudes.’’
Sherman scored on a 1-yard run and New York Jets kicker Jason Myers added a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter as the American squad seized a 17-0 half-time edge.
Myers added a 47-yard field goal in the third period, when more trick plays were utilized and talent was sometimes used in unusual positions, adding to the relaxed atmosphere compared to typical NFL matchups, which included not bringing stopped players with the ball to the ground.
