The whole country will experience a monsoon break as the northeast monsoon or “amihan” weakens temporarily.
According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration, the ridge of the high-pressure area, an anti-cyclone weather system, will particularly affect Northern Luzon.
Aurora, Quezon, Palawan, Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Masbate, Visayas, and Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.
PAGASA advised residents to be alert against possible flash floods during severe thunderstorms.
The weak amihan will bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies over Metro Manila and the rest of the country.
Northeast monsoon season usually prevails from late October to early March and reaches its peak during February.
Baguio City’s coldest day so far this amihan season was recorded last Jan. 30 at nine degrees Celsius while Metro Manila registered its coldest day last Jan. 17 at 19 degrees Celsius.
PAGASA said the occurrence of tropical cyclone this month is very slim.
It expects a generally way below to below normal rainfall conditions over most parts of Luzon and Visayas while rainfall condition will be near normal in most parts of Mindanao.
Meanwhile, make sure to catch the planetarium shows and stargazing and telescoping activities for free from Feb. 17 to 23 as part of the country’s celebration of the National Astronomy Week.
PAGASA, the agency mandated under Presidential Proclamation No. 130 to spearhead the annual celebration, has prepared activities for the whole celebration.
The free planetarium shows and telescoping sessions will be held at the PAGASA Planetarium on Agham Road and PAGASA Observatory in UP Diliman, Quezon City, respectively. (Ellalyn V. Ruiz)
