The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is deporting an American wanted for rape by authorities in the state of Alaska that took place almost 20 years ago.
Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the American as 57-year-old Carmen Daniel Perzechino Jr. who was arrested last week by operatives of the fugitive search unit (FSU) of the bureau at his apartment in Angeles City, Pampanga.
Morente said the US Embassy in Manila requested the arrest of Perzechino after it learned of his presence here.
Perzechino fled to the country last February 11 after he was tipped of his impending arrest.
The BI chief said Perzechino’s passport was already cancelled by the US State Department to facilitate his immediate deportation as an undocumented alien.
He disclosed that Perzechino is subject of an arrest warrant by a Superior Court in Kenai, Alaska, where he was charged with two counts of sexual assault in the first degree and one count of kidnapping with sexual assault.
According to FSU chief Bobby Raquepo, Perzechino committed his alleged crime in Sterling, Alaska on Jan. 20, 2001, kidnapping and raping the victim.
“If he did that in the US, there is a possibility that he might commit the same crime in the Philippines. Criminals like him ought to be barred from ever setting foot in our country,” Morente said.
The American is presently detained at the immigration facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig, pending issuance by the BI Board of Commissioners of the summary deportation order. (Jun Ramirez)
