Second seed Fide Master Nelson Mariano III ruled the recent Metropolitan Chess Club (MCC) Fide-rated Standard Open Chess Tournament held at the Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong City.
Mariano, with FIDE rating of 2268, finished in a tie for first place with International Master Barlo Nadera with 6.0 points after seven-rounds of play.
Mariano, however, won the championship and took home the top purse of R6,000 plus the champion trophy and the gold medal due to his superior quotient.
Nadera, with Fide rating of 2293, landed in second place and received R3,000 and silver medal for his feat. In solo third was Jose Carlo Castro with 5.5 points and got the cash prize of R2,000 plus bronze medal.
Rounding off the top 10: NM Noel dela Cruz (4th); NM Emmanuel Emperado (5th); Alwin Sopungco (6th); Dandel Fernandez (7th); Joel Ambas (8th); FM Adrian Ros Pacis (9th); and Charles Vincent Galpo (10th).
Other winners were: Top Senior – NM Efren Bagamasbad; Top Lady- WNM Carmelita Abanes; Top High School- Cyrus Vladimir Francisco; Top kiddies 12-under – Cedric Khalel Abris; Top kiddies 10-under – John Marc Pescador. Cited as the youngest participant was six year old Jaden Lawrence Yusiong from Leyte.
