A policeman assigned to the Navotas City police station was gunned down by still unidentified men onboard a motorcycle in Malabon City Friday.
Police Col. Jessie Tamayao, Malabon police chief, identified the victim as Police Corporal Alex Vitug Jr. of Llano, Caloocan City.
Police Col. Rolando Balasabas, Navotas police chief, said Vitug was assigned to the Caloocan police drug unit before he was transferred to Navotas police mobile patrol unit.
Investigation showed that Vitug was on his way to the Navotas police station onboard his motorcycle when two men on a motorcycle appeared and opened fire at the victim at the corner of Araneta and Tuazon Avenues in Barangay Potrero at around 7:30 p.m.
Police Corporal Michael Oben, officer-on-case, said that the victim’s service firearm and motorcycle were missing when he responded to the incident. Only the victim’s wallet, which had his money and other IDs, was recovered at the crime scene, Tamayao added.
Police have yet to establish the motive behind the killing. (Joseph Almer Pedrajas)
