Manila City Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso vowed to rehabilitate the Vitas Slaughter House in Tondo district after seeing it in a “state of despair” during an inspection Wednesday morning.
“We will try to come up with a new slaughterhouse, (as well as an) in-city vertical housing program (in the area). It’s going to be a community development,” he said.
Domagoso said he plans to build four new buildings within the compound.
The four new buildings will consists of a poultry dressing area, a house compound for the residents, an admin city compound and animal clinic, and cattle and hogs pen, according to the mayor.
He said the new slaughterhouse will be operational by next year.
During the inspection, the mayor found out that the slaughterhouse does not have a sewage treatment plant and proper cleaning equipment
“I will not allow this. I cannot tolerate this,” he said.
The mayor also said he will propose measures to preserve the quality of meat being sold in the slaughter house.
“You cannot take this sitting down because what we are after is the people of Manila who will buy meat in the wet market,” he said. (Erma Edera)
