Don Trollano has found his mark as TNT KaTropa’s major contributors in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, a year after he almost making the national team roster in the Asian Games.
It was at this time last year in Jakarta when Trollano had to give the once in a lifetime opportunity of representing the country to make room for NBA player Jordan Clarkson.
In fact, PH coach Yeng Guiao jokingly called him “Don Clarkson” in reference to the roster change while Trollano relished his 15 minutes of fame.
“Sumikat nga ako dun e (I became popular there),” Trollano said while laughing.
“Pero naging motivation sa akin na malay mo someday. Na-out ako pero okay lang sa akin. (But being cut made me motivated to prove someday I could shine.)
Twelve months had past since the Asiad and Trollano had made himself a key figure in TNT’s two victories over San Miguel through three games of the best-of-seven series.
Trollano is averaging 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, starting off the Finals with back-to-back double-doubles before scoring a career-high 18 points in TNT’s 115-105 win in Game 3.
“It’s probably me playing him more minutes,” said TNT consultant Mark Dickel in jest.
Dickel revealed that Trollano’s improved play and hustle convinced TNT management to a long-term contract for his hustle and energy on both ends.
“I’ve talked to him just about playing defense, crashing the offensive glass and just allowing the game to come to you. He’s got a role now in the team and he’s earned it.”
Winning a title would mean so much for Trollano, who previously won a championship in the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup while playing limited minutes as a rookie for Rain or Shine.
