Woman International Master Jan Jodilyn Fronda downed Woman FIDE Master Allaney Jia Doroy in the 13th and final round to capture the 2019 National Women’s Chess Championship Grand Finals Standard Event crown at PACE headquarters in Quezon City on Wednesday.
Fronda, 25, prevailed after 42 moves of a King’s Indian duel to finish with 9.5 points on six wins and seven draws.
The victory earned Fronda a berth in the national team bound to the 2020 World Chess Olympiad in Russia along with WFM Shania Mae Mendoza, who finished second following a ninth-round triumph over May Ann Alcantara in 54 moves of a French Defense.
Mendoza actually ended up tied with Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna and WIM Marie Antoinette San Diego with identical 9 points, but clinched the runner-up honor and the other Olympiad ticket due to her superior quotient.
She finished with six wins, five draws and one loss.
Frayna, meanwhile, defeated Mira Mirano in 47 moves of a Slav game in the last round while San Diego trounced Samantha Umayan after 32 moves of a London System tussle.
WIMs Kylen Joy Mordido and Catherine Secopito came in fifth and sixth with 8.5 points, WIM Bernadette Galas settled for seventh with 8, and WIM Mikee Charlene Suede placed ninth with 7 points.
