Rio Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz bagged two bronze medals in the International Weightlifting Federation World Championships late Friday night in Pattaya, Thailand.
Diaz, the 2018 Asian Games gold medal winner, had a total of 93 points in the snatch and 121 points in the clean and jerk to win the bronze medals in the women’s 55-kg division of the event. She finished behind China’s Liao Quiyun and Zhang Wangqiong.
“It is a privilege given by God to represent my beloved country, Philippines in a prestigious competition at the IWF World Championship 2019,” she said via her Twitter handle @diaz_hidilyn.
“Thank you @PSC for the support given to the whole Philippine Weightlifting team,” added Diaz, referring to the government agency Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) under chairman Butch Ramirez.
The event is one of Diaz’s qualifying tournaments for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and it also serves as her preparation for the Southeast Asian Games that will be held later in the year on home soil. (Waylon Galvez)
