Instead of taking Communion by mouth, the faithful in the Diocese of Balanga in Bataan are being encouraged to receive it by hand.
This, amid the threat of the 2019 novel coronavirus which already killed more than 100 people in China.
Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos said this is a precautionary measure against the disease.
“We have to be vigilant. Human coronavirus spread from infected person to others through the air by coughing and sneezing, close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands, touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching mouth, nose or eyes,” he said in a statement.
“It is prudent to minimize contacts as to prevent spread of infection not only of coronavirus but other viruses as well,” added Santos.
Also being discouraged are the holding of hands during the “Our Father” part of the Mass.
Bishop Santos also asked the faithful to forego kissing bishop’s ring.
According to the prelate, this will be observed only until the outbreak is “controlled.”
The Diocesan prayer against the spread of Coronavirus, Santos said will also be recited after the Post Communion prayer. (Leslie Ann G. Aquino)
