The Bureau of Customs intercepted a total of P1.1-million cash from a Malaysian at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport the other day.
Gan Kang Hsiung, 32, had just arrived at Terminal 3 around 9 p.m. from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia when a Customs examiner asked him to bring his checked in baggage for examination.
According to the BoC, “the incident started when the duty Customs examiner noticed a passenger and his two companions acting suspiciously.”
“He then directed the passenger…to bring his checked-in baggage to the Customs examination lane.”
The Customs examiner, with the help of other Customs operatives, examined the Malaysian’s baggage and found several bundles of P500 and P1,000 bills totaling P1.1 million.
The money was immediately seized by authorities for violation of Republic Act No. 10863 (Customs Modernization and Tariff Act), in relation to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Circular No. 922, Serie of 2016, on Cross-Border Transfer of Local and Foreign Currencies. (Joseph Pedrajas)
