A South Korean wanted in his country for extortion was arrested by government agents in Pasay City on Friday.
Acting NBI Director Eric Distor said the fugitive, Kim Tae Young, was nabbed at the HK Sun Plaza in Pasay City by joint operatives of the NBI’s Special Action Unit (NBI-SAU) and the Bureau of Immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit (BI-FSU).
Distor said Young has two warrants of arrests from South Korea which were issued on December 2, 2016 and June 25, 2016 for multiple offenses including special extortion.
The NBI chief said the charges concern around 500 million Korean won or an estimated P20.5 million.
Prior his arrest, a joint operation was conducted by the NBI-SAU, Bureau of Customs and Philippine Coast Guard last May 6 concerning illegal goods at a warehouse at the HK Sun Plaza.
During the operation, the team was able to talk to Young who was found to be the owner of the illegal goods. The NBI then conducted a verification with the Korean Embassy which informed the bureau that Young is a fugitive.
In the meantime, the Korean remains in the custody of the NBI headquarters in Manila. (Jeffrey Damicog)
