TACLOBAN City – Two inmates were killed while five others are now being hunted after they escaped from Calbayong City Jail in Samar on Monday.
Lt. Col. Sam Andarino, Calbayog Police chief, said eight inmates identified as Milo Ligason, 36; Eron Tomboc, 25; Edgar Elbano, 45; Edar Balantino, 33; Juvy Openiano; Edwin Abria; Eden Albana; and Raul Doroja, 43, bolted jail at about 2 p.m.
Initial investigation showed that inmates escaped while the duty jail guards — SJO1 Manuel Sabio Jr. and JO1 Mark de Guzman — were setting up the water hose from Calbayog City Water District mobile water tank at the main and secondary gates.
The inmates attacked the guards and forcibly opened the jail gates.
The inmates fled towards the mountainous area of the place, but the guards neutralized inmate Balantino in one of the houses in front of the city jail.
Abria and Openiano were shot by the guards while climbing the hill. They were brought to Calbayog District Hospital but Abria was declared dead on arrival. Openiano is still undergoing treatment.
Lt. Col. Andarino advised the public to report any information on the whereabouts of the five remaining escapees. (Marie Tonette Marticio)
