The head of the country’s correctional bureau said on Friday that he supports the revival of the death penalty.
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Director General Gerald Bantag said that he is “1,000 percent” in favor of the reimposition of the death penalty in the country to get rid of those who continue to operate illegal drugs trade despite their conviction.
In an interview with reporters after a site visit for the future Correctional Institute for Women facility to be built inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) compound, Bantag noted that there are actually “many who are in favor of lethal injection” as one way to impose death penalty.
Bantag’s support for lethal injection came after President Duterte endorsed to the joint Congress during his 5th State of the Nation Address the return of death penalty.
Bantag believes that the reimposition of the death penalty will not only get rid of convicts who are still operating drug trade but will also scare their suspected cohorts. (Joseph Pedrajas)
