Manila Mayor Isko Moreno has suspended five of the city’s barangay chairmen for six months without pay for various offenses, including serious dishonesty, abuse of authority and grave misconduct.
Moreno on Monday signed memoranda against the five erring officials, implementing the suspension order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman.
The chairmen, whose suspension will take effect immediately, were identified as: Mario Banal of Barangay 123, Leonard Recto of Barangay 11, Romeo Garcia of Barangay 449, Jonas Bartolome of Barangay 418 and Niño Anthony Magno of Barangay 283.
The complaints or charges against the barangay chairmen are as follows:
Banal – grave misconduct, conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service, abuse of authority and gross dishonesty.
Recto (under investigation) – a complaint from the office of Interior Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño.
Garcia – grave misconduct, dishonesty and conduct unbecoming of a public official.
Bartolome (under investigation) – grave misconduct, serious dishonesty prejudicial to the best interest of the service, and abuse of authority.
Magno – grave misconduct, conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service, abuse of authority, serious dishonesty and violation of Republic Act No. 6713.
The first ranking barangay councilors of the said chairmen will take over as acting barangay heads, the PIO added.
