A police sergeant died when his gun accidentally went off during a heated argument with his assets in Cadiz City in Negros Occidental last Thursday night.
Col. Roger James Brillantes, director of the Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS) in Western Visayas, said the service firearm of Staff Sgt. Bernie Sales went off while he was being pacified by one of the assets during their meeting in Barangay Zone 4.
Brillantes said lawyer Alfegar Triambulo, director of the Internal Affairs Service (IAS), already ordered the conduct of a thorough investigation of the incident.
“We conducted an investigation on the incident based on the initial report of illegal discharge of firearms,” said Brillantes.
Sales, 37, was an intelligence operative of the Sagay City Police Station in Negros Occidental.
On Thursday night, he met with his three assets but it resulted in a heated argument. Sales reportedly drew his gun but he was asked by one of the assets to calm down.
But Sales allegedly went on which forced the female asset to try to grab the gun from him.
The gun then went off and the bullet hit Sales. He was immediately taken to the hospital but was declared dead.
Brillantes said they are continuously investigating the case to determine if there was a foul play behind Sales’ death. (Aaron Recuenco)
