The donkey is one animal associated with the birth of Christ. It is told that the Blessed Mother rode a donkey escorted by her husband, Joseph, as they searched far and wide for a place to stay the night.
It was the night Mary was to give birth to baby Jesus at an animal barn in Jerusalem.
Google says the donkey or ass is a domesticated member of the horse family, Equidae.
The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African wild ass, E. africanus. The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5000 years.
Today’s domesticated donkeys are all descended from African wild asses ancestors. Donkeys were first domesticated around 6,000 years ago in North Africa and Egypt for meat and milk.
Do we have donkeys in the Philippines?
There are a few, but the ones in Baluarte, a vast zoo and resort in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, are used as tourist attraction only.
