The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has expressed readiness to assist those who are affected by a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that rocked Sarangani province in Mindanao Wednesday morning.
The DSWD Field Office XII reported that it has mobilized its social workers to determine if there are families affected by the quake that struck at 7:22 a.m. today.
“We are on standby and ready to assist and augment resources for affected local government units,” DSWD Regional Director Cezario Joel Espejo said in a statement posted on the DSWD’s official Facebook page.
He said they have yet to receive reports from the field and from local government units (LGUs) for augmentation support requests.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) , the quake, which has a depth of 54km, was centered 11 km northeast of Alabel, Sarangani Province.
The quake was felt in General Santos City; Kiamba, Sarangani; Tupi and Koronadal City, South Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani; and Kidapawan City.
The Phivolcs said aftershocks and damage are to be expected. (Charissa Luci-Atienza)
