A man posing as an employee of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) was arrested inside the bureau’s headquarters in Manila after he extorted money from a clearance applicant.
NBI Officer-in-Charge Director Eric B. Distor said the suspect, Mark Endaya Cabal, was arrested after a complaint was filed against him by one of his victims.
The complainant recounted that he met the suspect outside the NBI Clearance Building in Manila. He was wearing an NBI shirt which made him look like an employee of the bureau.
The suspect offered to help him secure an NBI clearance. However, the complainant said Cabal told him that he has a pending drug case with an arrest warrant.
“The subject (Cabal) threatened the complainant of arrest if he will not give P100,000,” the NBI said.
After paying P40,000, Cabal continued to demand from the complainant P60,000 and threatened him with imprisonment or death. This prompted him to seek the help of the NBI.
“Upon verification, the NBI-SAU (Special Action Unit) also found that Subject Cabal has several complaints against him for Robbery/Extortion and Estafa,” the NBI said.
“Subject Cabal was presented for Inquest proceedings before the Office of Prosecutors of Manila,” it added.
Seized from the suspect during the operation were three heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu. Cabal was charged with robbery and extortion. The NBI did not state if Cabal was also charged with possession of illegal drugs.
