LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The Pangasinan Provincial Police Office (PPO) has recorded a total of 118 suicide cases in the province since the start of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.
Major Arturo Melchor, PPO spokesperson, said that out of the 118 suicide cases, 101 happened from January to December 2020 and 17 occurred from January 2021 up to this month.
Based on the data, most of the victims hanged themselves using nylon rope. Five of them were women while the rest were men.
Depression was the reason behind the rise in the number of suicide incidents in province, according to police.
Top municipalities with high number of suicide cases were Dagupan, San Carlos, Sual, Calasiao, and Manaoag.
The latest suicide incident was reported in Barangay Palma, Basista, Pangasinan.
Police said Abet Cabuang, 23, was discovered by his relatives hanging with a rope looped around his neck inside his room.
Probers said the suicide happened after the victim had a quarrel with his girlfriend. (Liezle Basa Inigo)
